Lightsaber knife could change the way we cook and eat

It could change the way we prepare food - and be every Star Wars fan's dram utensil.
A Taiwanese researcher has reached the final of a prestigious design contest with her Lightsaber Knife.
The concept uses an as yet undeveloped liquid metal to switch between blades, meaning it is always for fish, meat or even as a steak knife at the table.
How it works:The lightsaber knife has a switch so the user can select what type of knife they require. It then uses as yet undeveloped 'liquid metal' to form the correct blade. When not it use, the knife is stored in a recharging station.
The technology is similar to those found in the lightsaber - but sadly does not yet exist
The concept was invented by Chia-Yu Yeh, a student at the National Taipei University Of Technology.
'I believe that one must have good tool to do a good job,' she said.
'Lightsaber Knife uses Liquidmetal to produce any kinds of knife.
'Users don't need to maintain knifes and wash it, because Liquidmetal can produce wonderful a high quality knife again.'
The judges said the knife could be a major step forward.
'A breakthrough use of a knife with a precise yet multifunctional solution,' said Electrolux's Julio Bertola.
'For further development we suggest you look carefully into safety issues.
'Could the safety of the concept be reassured through a physical lock or some other solution?'
The knife uses a liquid metal blade that can change its shape at the touch of a button.

The idea is one of 100 out of more than 1,700 submissions have been selected by experts from Electrolux to compete for participation in the next stage in the global design competition.
The main prize is 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center.
The theme for 2014 is Creating Healthy Homes with three focus areas, Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification.
'We are excited to open up the voting to the public and our employees around the world,' said Lars Erikson, Electrolux Head of Group Design.
'We received some really innovative, visually inspiring concepts based on this year's theme.
'They range from appliances to smart accessories to holistic concepts, and support consumers in living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.'
Put the internet to work for you.
