Amazon reveals Dash button that reorders products from a fridge

It may have pioneers one click shopping with a mouse - but now Amazon hopes to do it with real buttons as well.

The firm today revealed the Dash Button, a large, wifi enabled button that can be used to reorder common household products such as washing powder or even drinks.

The firm is also working with home appliance makers to develop machines to order themselves - such as a coffee machine that knows when you are running low on beans.

HOW IT WORKS

Users set up Amazon's Dash Button using the Amazon mobile app to assign the product you want the Dash Button to order with a single press.

The button will automatically trigger an order to your default address using your default Amazon payment order, and you can cancel it via your phone.

The standalone Dash button can be stuck on a fridge or washing machine, and is branded to each product.

'Dash Button comes with a reusable adhesive and a hook so you can hang, stick, or place it right where you need it,' said Amazon.

'Keep Dash Button handy in the kitchen, bath, laundry, or anywhere you store your favorite products.

'When you're running low, simply press Dash Button, and Amazon quickly delivers household favourites so you can skip the last-minute trip to the store.'

At launch, the eligible products for the Dash Button include things like toilet paper, cleaning products, juice, personal grooming products, dog food and much more.

Some products will even auto-detect when they need replacement supplies and order instantly if a consumer enables that feature.

'Dash Replenishment Service (DRS) enables connected devices to order physical goods from Amazon when supplies are running low—like a coffee maker that orders more coffee beans.

'By using DRS, device makers are able to leverage Amazon's authentication and payment systems, customer service, and fulfillment network—giving their customers access to Amazon's low prices, great selection, and reliable delivery. '

Amazon has already revealed a range of brands for the new system

One of the first firms to use the system is Whirlpool.

It's new smart top-load washer and dryer will soon be able to help anticipate when laundry supplies are running low and can provide automatic ordering through DRS.

'Amazon has been great to work with—together we'll help ensure customers always have the right laundry supplies on hand when needed,' said Brett Dibkey of Whirlpool.

'For Whirlpool, this collaboration is all about taking steps out and keeping life simple."
