Women really are unpredictable in bed: Researchers say females have 'more varied' responses than men - who orgasm 85% of the time with a familiar partner

Men are far more likely to reach orgasm that women in bed - but women have far more varied types of orgasm, researchers have found.

Researchers say that among single adults in the U.S., women, regardless of sexual orientation, have less predictable, more varied orgasm experiences than do men, new research indicates.

The study revealed that men experience orgasm during sexual activity with a familiar partner 85% of the time on average, compared with 63% of the time for women.

HOW THEY DID IT

Data were collected by Internet questionnaire from 6,151 men and women (ages 21–65+ years old).

Analyses were restricted to a subsample of 2,850 singles (1,497 men, 1,353 women) who had experienced sexual activity in the past 12 months.

Participants reported their sex/gender, self-identified sexual orientation (heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual), and what percentage of the time they experience orgasm when having sex with a familiar partner.

'Despite recent advances in understanding orgasm variation, little is known about ways in which sexual orientation is associated with men's and women's orgasm occurrence,' the researchers, led by Indiana University, say in the journal of Sexual Medicine.

They questioned over 6,500 men and women ranging from 21-65 across America.

'Mean occurrence rate for experiencing orgasm during sexual activity with a familiar partner was 62.9% among single women and 85.1% among single men, which was significantly different,' the researchers concluded.

They also found lesbians experience orgasm during sex 75% of the time, compared to 62% for straight women and 58% for bisexual women.

The Journal of Sexual Medicine study also found that for women, but not men, the likelihood of orgasm varies with sexual orientation, with lesbian women having a significantly higher probability of orgasm than either heterosexual or bisexual women (75%, 62%, and 58%, respectively).

They also found lesbians experience orgasm during sex 75% of the time, compared to 62% for straight women and 58% for bisexual women.

The researchers theorize this could be because lesbian sex lasts longer, according to previous research on the length of sexual encounters - or because women are more comfortable with the female body.

'One possible explanation is that...lesbian women are more comfortable and familiar with the female body and thus, on average, are better able to induce orgasm in their female partners,' The study's authors wrote.

They concluded 'Findings from this large dataset of U.S. singles suggest that women, regardless of sexual orientation, have less predictable, more varied orgasm experiences than do men and that for women, but not men, the likelihood of orgasm varies with sexual orientation.

'These findings demonstrate the need for further investigations into the comparative sexual experiences and sexual health outcomes of sexual minorities.'
