It is the most exclusive app Facebook has ever released - and only celebrities will be able to use it.

Called Mentions, the app is designed to allow 'actors, athletes, musicians and other influencers' to chat with their fans.

It allows them to reply to messages, take part in live chats and post updates - without seeing newsfeeds, quizzes and ads.

The most exclusive app: Facebook mentions can only be used by those who have a verified account, such as actors, musicians and other celebrities.

HOW TO GET IT

Mentions is currently only available for people with verified Pages in the US, Facebook said.

'If you are an admin of a verified Page, you can request access to Mentions directly.

'If you are a public figure, you can also download the iPhone app to request access.

'Today, we're introducing Facebook Mentions, a new Facebook Creative Labs app that makes it easy for public figures to talk with their fans and each other on the go,' the firm said.

'Nearly 800 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook, and interacting with athletes, musicians, actors and other influencers is an important part of their experience,' Facebook said.

'From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than a billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week.

'We want to make these interactions even better.'

The Mentions app is far simpler than Facebook's usual app, and shows social activity such as messages and shares relating to the celebrity.

The app is designed to allow celebrities to conduct chats and message their users easily, without the distractions of a normal Facebook page.

The firm hopes the app will mean celebrities are more likely to interact with their fans.

It also makes it simple to hold online chats - and Facebook shows Mariah Carey chatting with fans as one example.

It also gets rid of the notifications that plague most Facebook accounts.

'Get streamlined notifications about your posts, including mentions from other influencers or the media,' the site says.

However, it sdays getting verified in the first place is tougher.

'Keep in mind that not all authentic profiles and Pages are verified and that you can't request to have your profile or Page verified.'
