It first appeared on Finnish firm Nokia's 6110 handset in 1997 - but Snake is set to get a new lease of life as a smartphone game called Snake Rewind.

Taneli Armanto, who created the version for Nokia, is working with a developer called Rumilus Design to create an app known as Snake Rewind.

The game will be released for iOS, Android and Windows Phone next Thursday, he revealed today.

'Snake Rewind takes the iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake game and combines them with cool visual effects, sounds and innovative new features,' he said.

The website suggests it will be free to download but cost to upgrade.

THE NOKIA 6110

The Nokia 6110 was smaller and lighter than anything Nokia had produced to date, and boasted a 270 hour standby battery time.

The iconic handset had its own diary feature as well as an infra red port to connect to a computer.

It was also the first phone to feature Nokia's famous Snake game

'The game can be immediately picked up and enjoyed by everyone, while offering many fun and challenging goals and discoveries for a long-lasting experience.'

Unlike the original game, players will be able to rewind the snake after it has crashed, as well as being able to collect new bonuses, power ups and unlocking extra levels.

The app will feature 'many different types of special fruit' which can be purchased through a 'fruit store'.

The website suggests it will be free to download but cost to upgrade.

Finnish developer Taneli Armanto first brought Snake to Nokia's 6110 handset in 1997.

He worked at the company for nearly 16 years before leaving in 2011.

The game made a big impact when it was released in the late 1997.

Since then, it has been featured in over 400 million Nokia phones and is one of the most popular games in history.

In 2005, Armanto talked publicly about Snake after receiving a mobile industry award for his work.

'When we created Snake for the Nokia 6110 in 1997, we wanted to give people an entertaining experience, but we never imagined that it would become the classic mobile game,' he said then.

'It showed people that you could create a great game for a mobile phone.

'In particular, we wanted to take advantage of the infrared link in the Nokia 6110 – a first at that time – which would allow people to play against each other.'
