Jawbone has revealed a new fitness sensor it claims can constantly monitor the wearer's heart rate - and even tell them if they need more sleep.

The UP3 band will go on sale later this year for $149, and can offer wearer's health advice.

It was launched alongside a $50 fitness tracker called the Move, described as a 'beginner's tracker'.

The UP3 features:

● Multi-sensor Platform: The advanced multi-sensor platform includes a new tri-axis accelerometer, sophisticated bioimpedance sensors, and skin and ambient temperature sensors.

● Advanced Sleep: UP3 captures detailed sleep stages including REM, Light and Deep sleep,

● Advanced Activity: New smart algorithms allow UP3 to automatically identify workouts and classify your activities, including running, cross-training, tennis, and many more.

● Smart Coach: Keeps track of your progress and gives you personalised guidance to help you reach your goals faster.

'People are generally disappointed with wearable trackers out of the box, Andrew Rosenthal of Jawbone told MailOnline.

'The UP3 doesn't just collect data, it tells you what to do with it,' he said.

Rivals, including the Apple Watch, combine infrared and visible-light LEDs with photosensors, which are more battery-intensive.

The wristband uses a technique called bioimpedance to track its owner's pulse.

This involves passing an imperceptible electrical current through the body to measure its resistance to the effect.

The bands also use a new app.

'UP3 connects with the industry-leading UP App to bring you Smart Coach – an intelligent system that keeps track of your progress and gives you personalised guidance to help you reach your goals faster,' the firm says.

'The more information UP3 captures about your sleep, activity, meals and other biometric signals, the more Smart Coach can do for you.'

Experts say the coaching app could help the system become a hit.

'There are a lot of people out there who feel they don't get enough sleep or feel they are stressed and want to monitor their levels from a healthy lifestyle standpoint,' said Tim Shepherd, a wearable tech specialist at the market research firm Canalys told the BBC.

'We are seeing a surge in interest in people getting data on their lifestyles, but the important thing is to offer not just data but a means of analysing it, graphing it and telling you what it means, and vendors still need to have to prove they can be relevant.'

'With UP3, our mission was to create the world's most powerful tracker in the smallest possible design' said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone.

'Our advanced, multi-sensor platform delivers a huge amount of new health data, backed by our smart algorithms and highly personalised Smart Coach system. And because UP3 is fully updateable, we're able to unveil new features and experiences in the coming months.'

Jawbone is already the world's second best-selling fitness band manufacturer, behind only Fitbit, according to Canalys.

The $50 (£39.99), UP Move can also track sleep.

'Up Move by Jawbone is a fun, easy way to track activity and at JUST £39.99, it's a great option for anyone at the beginning of a fitness or weight loss journey,' said Travis Bogard.

'Incorporating the same best-in-class lifestyle and activity-tracking features of our UP and UP24 bands, the Move band combines style, versatility and comfort with highly accurate tracking and personalised guidance.'
