Dating app Tinder is taking on Snapchat with a new self destructing picture service.

It will allow people who match with each other on the service to send pictures visible for 24 hours.

The firm hopes the new service will encourage people to use the app for messaging as well as hookups and dating.

HOW IT WORKS

A user can click on a camera icon at the top of their 'Matches' tab to take a photo that will be shared with all their matches.

Others can react by swiping right to 'like' or left to 'no' a Moment, just as you would profiles.

Users can also send a message straight from a moment.

Pictures get erased from existence in 24 hours.

The app has been a huge success, with more than 850 million swipes and more than 10 million matches every single day.

'Moments are swipe-able photos you can instantly share with all of your matches at once,' the firm said.

'With Moments you can swipe through fun Moments shared by your matches and get a glimpse into each others lives.

'You can react by swiping right to 'like or left to 'nope' a Moment, just as you would profiles, or you can take it one step further and reply with a message.

'Moments are the perfect excuse to say more than just "hello."

'Just like real life the moments we experience start to fade, which is why every shared Tinder Moment can only be seen for 24 hours.'

The 18-month-old app has not yet generated any revenue, although monetisation schemes are being planned.

'It was almost 2 years ago that we came to the realization that even with all the networks we have at our disposal, the ways in which we meet new people were boring, outdated, and filled with barriers,' the firm said

'We envisioned a solution that was extremely fun, natural, and would mimic our real world behaviors - and Tinder was born.

'With 2 billion matches made to date, we're now giving you a whole new way to get to know your matches.'

Although the firm has refused to provide specific user numbers, analytics firm Comscore has said that as of April 2014, there were 2.7 million smartphones using the app - a huge increase even from last July.
